CBC News

Organization: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)

Position: Investigative Unit Intern

Location: Toronto, ON

During the spring of 2022, I had a unique opportunity to work in the Investigative Unit at CBC. This opportunity opened my eyes to what covering news stories for a national audience looks like. In this role, I assisted some of the best Canadian journalists with interviewing, researching, and producing ground-breaking news stories.

This included stories on racist allegations made towards Bobsled Canada, discovering how long-term care residents were misdiagnosed with anti-psychotics, unveiling allegations of an indigenous healer lying about his identity, and investigating how many doctors benefited off taxpayer money despite not needing it.

Working on some of these stories taught me about the process behind working on deep investigative news stories and how much due diligence goes into publishing sensitive information.

The stories I contributed to were featured in the following CBC News platforms:

  • The National (Television)

  • Go Public (Digital)

  • CBC Investigative News (Digital)

Some of the tasks I took on while on the job included chasing contacts for stories, creating graphics, providing extensive research on story topics, utilizing Microsoft Excel to synthesize data, and proofreading television scripts.
